The summer solstice occurred on June 21, the first day of summer, when the Earth’s rotational axis was maximally tilted toward the sun. With the sun reaching its highest point in the sky, the summer solstice is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Also known as “midsummer” by centuries of farmers who have already planted their crops in the spring, homages to the summer solstice and the life-giving powers of the sun have been practiced through millennia. Ancient civilizations have all left symbols of their reverence for and celebration of the sun.
